"Speak Up, Stand Out!" This is the heartbeat of Term 5 at the Expression Circle. It’s not just a catchy slogan; it’s a call to action for every young person to realize that their voice matters. This term is all about exploring identity, building confidence, and nurturing the power of storytelling. When young people share the truth about the issues that resonate with them, real change begins.
Why Storytelling Matters Now More Than Ever
In a world saturated with content, one thing remains timeless: stories. They connect us. They teach us empathy. And most importantly, they show young people that their lived experiences are valid and worthy of being heard.
This term, we’re diving deep into personal storytelling, advocacy, and community engagement. Through the theme “Speak Up, Stand Out,” we are empowering young people to take ownership of their narratives, whether that means sharing a memory that shaped them or highlighting a social issue in their neighborhood.
Research has shown that storytelling enhances cognitive development and emotional intelligence in youth. An article by Muhammed Ali Isik illustrates how storytelling can help young learners process trauma and build resilience. When young minds realize that their stories matter, they begin to see themselves as authors of their own futures.
A New Chapter: The Launch of the Foundation Library
As part of our commitment to nurturing a culture of literacy and imagination, we’re excited to launch the Foundation Library this term. This cozy, rotating book corner will be a safe space for our students to discover new worlds, one page at a time. It’s not just about reading, it’s about sparking imagination, encouraging thoughtful reflection, and inspiring new storytellers.
Each weekly meeting will feature a reading segment and an opportunity for young participants to pick and share their reflections on what they've read.
The Power of Your Story
We believe that everyone has a story that deserves to be told. Whether it’s a small triumph, a struggle overcome, or a moment of unexpected kindness, your voice could inspire someone else. Just like the children in The Moth’s Education Program who bravely take the stage to share their personal truths (watch here), we encourage our readers to speak up, stand out, and shine.
So here’s our challenge to you: share your own short personal story in the comments. Tell us about a moment that shaped you, a lesson that stuck, or a dream you’re working toward. Your words might just be the story someone needs to hear.
In Closing: This Is Just the Beginning
As we journey through Term 5, from self-expression in May to community advocacy in June and public speaking in July, we hope every young person walks away feeling more seen, more heard, and more empowered.
Because when a young person finds their voice, they find their power.
Let’s build a world where every voice counts; starting with yours.
